Birmingham is a walkable town built around its downtown on Old Woodward and Maple, with tree-lined streets of older homes stretching out toward Quarton Lake. Its neighbors, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms and the Village of Franklin, share the same senior center, the same churches and many of the same doctors. Plenty of older residents here have walked to the library and the farmers market for decades and would rather not leave the house they raised their children in. Lily’s office is a short drive east on Maple Road, so our nurses are rarely far away.

Starting hospice in Birmingham: the first call and the first week

Many Birmingham families first hear the word hospice at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, the closest large hospital. Others are treated at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital or Henry Ford Providence Southfield Hospital. When a hospital doctor suggests comfort care, you can tell the discharge planner you would like Lily. We work with the hospital so equipment is delivered and medications are ready before your loved one arrives home. Read going home on hospice from Corewell Royal Oak, from Corewell Troy, or from Henry Ford Providence Southfield, and our general guide to leaving the hospital on hospice.

When the first call comes from home, a nurse visits, usually the same day, to understand what is happening and answer the family’s questions. In the first week you will meet your nurse, a hospice aide, a social worker and, if you would like, a chaplain. Everyone gets the same 24-hour number, and a person answers it.

Who qualifies for hospice

Hospice is for people whose doctors expect a serious illness to run its course within roughly six months, and who would rather focus on comfort than on more hospital treatment. That can mean late-stage dementia, cancer, heart failure, lung disease, kidney failure, ALS, Parkinson’s or general frailty. Two physicians certify eligibility. A person can walk, drive to lunch and still be on hospice; it is about the direction of the illness, not how someone looks today.

To think it through, read Is It Time? A gentle guide and the signs it may be time for hospice. A no-obligation evaluation is always available.

What Medicare, Medicaid and insurance cover

For people with Medicare Part A, hospice is covered in full: team visits, medications and equipment for the hospice diagnosis, supplies, respite stays and bereavement support. Medicare Advantage members use their Original Medicare hospice benefit, and Medicaid and most commercial insurers cover hospice too. Hospice does not pay for private-duty caregivers or for room and board in a facility. Nursing homes and assisted living in Birmingham

Birmingham and its neighbors are mostly single-family neighborhoods, so there are fewer licensed residences than in larger suburbs. Michigan’s licensing agency lists 8 state-licensed assisted living, adult foster care and homes-for-the-aged residences across Birmingham, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms and Franklin. 6 of the 8 list serving people with Alzheimer’s disease, and their licensed capacity totals 720 residents. The area has one Medicare-certified nursing home:

Hospice can come to a resident in any of these settings; ask the facility and us how it works there. Listing is for families’ reference and does not mean an affiliation.

Respite care

If you are the one doing the caregiving, you are allowed to rest. The hospice benefit covers up to five days of respite in a Medicare-approved facility, after which your loved one comes home. Families use it for a wedding out of town, a surgery of their own, or simply a few nights of sleep. Respite care, explained.
