Not all hospices are the same, and the choice matters more than most families realize. Whether or not you ever call us, here are the questions worth asking any hospice before you choose. Good hospices welcome every one of them.

Who answers the phone at night?

Ask whether a real person, ideally a nurse, answers after hours, and how quickly someone can come if there is a crisis. This is the single best predictor of how supported you will feel.

How often will the nurse and aide visit?

Ask what a typical week of visits looks like, and whether that can increase as needs change.

Where do you provide care?

Confirm they come to wherever your loved one lives, a home, assisted living, memory care, or a nursing facility.

How will you keep our family informed?

Ask how the team communicates with the family, and how they involve you in decisions.

What is covered, and what would we pay?

A good hospice will clearly explain the Medicare hospice benefit and any costs, without pressure.

Are you Medicare-certified and accredited?

Certification and accreditation are baseline signs of quality and accountability. Ask about experience with your loved one’s specific illness, too, and any special needs such as care for veterans.
