Which hospice is best in metro Detroit? An honest way to answer.

Written and reviewed by the Lily Hospice clinical team. Reviewed September 2026.

There is no single best hospice in metro Detroit, and any list that says otherwise is either an ad or a guess. There are 104 Medicare-certified hospices serving Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. The best one for your family is the one that answers the phone at night with a nurse, can admit quickly where your parent lives, has strong Medicare claims-based measures, and has families who describe specific things it did. Lily Hospice in Troy is one of them; here is how to check us and everyone else on the same terms.

Why “best” lists are mostly ads

Search for “best hospice in Detroit” and the top results are pages written by hospices ranking themselves first, and review sites ranking by how many reviews a hospice has collected, which mostly measures size and marketing. Neither looks at what Medicare actually measures. We built a directory that does.

Five questions that separate hospices

Who answers at 2 a.m.? Ask whether a nurse or an answering service picks up, and how long until a nurse calls back. How fast can you admit, including Fridays and weekends? Waiting until Monday can cost a family the days that mattered. Do you come to this building? Some hospices only serve certain facilities. What do your Care Compare numbers say? Especially the share of patients visited in the last three days of life; the national average is 48%. Who owns you, and how long have you existed? A third of metro Detroit’s hospices were certified in 2020 or later; ownership changes hands often.

Where Lily is strong, and where others are

Lily Hospice: 71% last-days visit rate, Hospice Care Index 9/10, 3% early live discharges, family-owned since 2021, same-day admission often, real person 24/7. We are weaker on weekend nursing minutes and have no inpatient unit; we say so on our honest answer page. If you want a residential hospice building, Angela Hospice (Livonia) and Heart to Heart (Troy) have one. If you want a large system with hospital ties, Henry Ford and Corewell have hospices. If you want a small team that shows up at home or in your parent’s facility across Oakland, Macomb or Wayne county, that is us.

Compare all 104 yourself

Our Metro Detroit Hospice Directory lists every Medicare-certified hospice serving the three counties with each one’s Care Compare measures, ownership, certification year and how much of each county it covers, sortable, with Lily on the same terms as everyone else. Our State of Hospice in Metro Detroit 2026 report explains what the numbers mean, and How to Choose a Hospice is a checklist you can use on any of them, including us.
