Grief Support Groups in Metro Detroit (Oakland, Macomb and Wayne Counties)

Metro Detroit has dozens of grief support groups, and many are free. Henry Ford Hospice, Hospice of Michigan and Angela Hospice run groups open to anyone grieving. New Hope Center, The Compassionate Friends, SandCastles and local Vet Centers serve specific losses. Below are 45 programs we checked in September 2026. Call before you go.

This is a neutral directory. It lists programs run by hospitals, hospices, nonprofits and churches across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties. Lily Hospice is not affiliated with any of them. We included a program only if we could confirm it on its own current website or schedule. Where a program did not publish a cost or schedule, we left that cell blank.

How to choose a grief group

Start with the type of loss. General groups welcome anyone. Loss-specific groups gather people who share one kind of loss, such as a spouse, a child or a suicide. Many people find it easier to talk when others in the room have lived the same thing.

Decide between in person and online. In-person groups build local friendships. Online groups work well if you do not drive, work days, or live far from a meeting site. Several hospices offer both.

Check the cost. Hospice and nonprofit groups in this list say they are free. GriefShare groups at churches usually charge $15 to $25 for a workbook, and some offer scholarships.

Ask how the group runs. Some groups are drop-in. Others meet for a set number of weeks with the same people. Children’s programs usually start with a phone intake with a parent.

Know when a group is not enough. Some grief needs more than a group. Talk to a counselor or your doctor if you have thoughts of harming yourself, or cannot eat or sleep for weeks. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, any time.

Hospice and hospital programs open to the community

Hospices must offer bereavement support to their own patients’ families. Several in the area also open their groups to anyone. Henry Ford Hospice says its groups are open to the community. Its fall 2026 flyer lists a virtual group and groups at Henry Ford Macomb and Henry Ford West Bloomfield hospitals. Hospice of Michigan’s Grief Journey Program runs Living On groups at senior centers across the three counties. Its fall 2026 schedule also lists loss-specific groups. They cover loss of a parent or spouse, sudden or traumatic loss, young adults, and mothers who lost an adult child. Angela Hospice says all of its grief groups are free and open to anyone in the community.

Grief support for children and teens

Children grieve in bursts, and they often do best around other kids who understand. These programs are built for them:

• SandCastles, run by Henry Ford Health, serves ages 3 to 18 and their families. Groups meet every other week at sites in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, in person or online. There is no charge. Call (313) 771-7005 to set up an intake.
• Angela Hospice Creative Connections in Livonia uses music therapy and grief counseling. It has one group for ages 5 to 13 and a teen series for ages 14 to 18.
• New Hope Center’s Circles of Hope offers monthly Family Fridays for ages 4 to 14, a teen group and a kids camp. Programs are free; registration is required.
• Ele’s Place Ann Arbor is not in the three counties, but it serves families from Oakland and Wayne. It runs free weekly peer groups for ages 3 to 18 and their adults, September to May.

After the death of a child

The death of a child, at any age, is a grief with its own shape. The Compassionate Friends is a peer organization for parents, siblings and grandparents. Four chapters meet in the area: Detroit, Livonia, the Troy chapter (which meets in Rochester), and St. Clair Shores. New Hope Center in Northville holds Parents of Hope and a pregnancy and infant loss group. Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital lists Heart to Heart for parents grieving a newborn.

After a suicide loss

Grief after a suicide can bring questions, guilt and silence that other losses do not. A group of people who have lived it can help. New Hope Center holds an ongoing suicide loss group in Northville on the first and third Wednesday of each month, at no cost. Kevin’s Song runs a free, facilitator-led virtual group for anyone who lost a loved one, friend or colleague to suicide. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention keeps a searchable list of groups. Hospice of Michigan also lists a group for sudden or traumatic loss.

Grief support for veterans and military families

Vet Centers offer bereavement counseling to Gold Star families, whose service member died on active duty. The Detroit and Dearborn centers also say they counsel families of veterans who were receiving Vet Center care when they died. Services are one-on-one rather than groups; the Dearborn center also refers families to community grief groups. There are Vet Centers in Detroit, Dearborn, Clinton Township and Pontiac. TAPS supports families of fallen service members nationwide, with a 24/7 helpline at (800) 959-8277. The Veterans Crisis Line is 988, then press 1.

Faith-based groups, including GriefShare

Many congregations host grief groups, and most welcome non-members. GriefShare is a Christian program that churches host, usually for 13 weeks. In September 2026 its locator listed groups at churches in Detroit, Troy, Sterling Heights and many other area cities. The table shows a small sample. Arabic- and Chaldean-speaking families

We could not confirm an Arabic- or Chaldean-language grief group on a current official page. The Chaldean Community Foundation’s Project Light in Sterling Heights offers counseling for ages 13 and up. Its licensed therapists are trilingual; ask which languages are available. Pet loss

Grief for a pet is real grief. Angela Hospice in Livonia holds a free Rainbow Bridges pet loss workshop from time to time; its most recent session was September 8, 2026. Check its grief events calendar for the next date.

Lily Hospice bereavement support

Lily Hospice provides bereavement support to families for at least a year after a death. That can include calls, visits, counseling and help finding a group that fits. There is no charge. Other places to ask

Dial 211 for Michigan 2-1-1, which can refer you to local counseling and support groups. Your doctor, your insurance plan’s behavioral health line, and the hospice that cared for your loved one can also point you to help. Common questions

Are grief support groups in metro Detroit free?

Many are. Henry Ford Hospice, Hospice of Michigan and Angela Hospice say their groups are free. New Hope Center charges nothing for ongoing groups. GriefShare groups usually charge $15 to $25 for a workbook. Ask about cost when you call.

Can I join a hospice grief group if my loved one was never on that hospice?

Often, yes. Henry Ford Hospice, Hospice of Michigan and Angela Hospice all say their groups are open to anyone in the community who is grieving. Most ask you to call or register first.

Is there a grief group for children and teens near Detroit?
