Caring for a veteran in Macomb County? A real person answers at Lily Hospice 24 hours a day. Tell us he or she served. You do not need a referral, and calling does not commit you to anything.
Macomb County has deep military roots. Selfridge Air National Guard Base sits in Harrison Township, the State of Michigan runs a veterans home in Chesterfield Township, and the county keeps its own Department of Veterans Services in Clinton Township. Many of the families who call us from Macomb are caring for a father, mother, husband or grandfather who served, and they want that service to count in how the last months go.
Lily Hospice is a family-owned, Medicare-certified hospice based in Troy, just across Dequindre Road from Sterling Heights, and we serve all of Macomb County. Lily is not veteran-owned; we say so plainly because it matters to some families. What we do have is a veterans program built with veterans, and a team that comes to wherever the veteran lives.
What Lily does for veterans in Macomb County
- A military history at admission. Where and when the veteran served shapes the care plan, not only the diagnosis.
- Veteran Rapid Response. When a veteran needs hospice quickly, our Veteran Rapid Response team, led by a nurse case manager who served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, works to get an evaluation done fast. Evaluations usually happen within 24 hours of the first call.
- Veteran-to-veteran visits. Volunteers who served visit those who served.
- Pinning ceremonies. A bedside recognition ceremony with family present, often with members of VFW Post 6896, whenever the veteran wants one. See a Navy veteran’s pinning ceremony.
- A Veteran Advisory Committee. Local veterans who hold us to a standard. The committee first met on October 7, 2026, chaired by Evan Shelline, a former U.S. Navy SEAL. Meet the committee.
- Trauma-aware symptom care. Some medications and moments can bring back what a veteran carried; our nurses plan around it.
- Help with VA paperwork, including Aid and Attendance and burial benefits, from our social worker, and bereavement support for the family for more than a year.
Lily is a We Honor Veterans Bronze Level partner. We Honor Veterans is a program of the National Alliance for Care at Home created with the Department of Veterans Affairs; the Bronze Level covers training our staff on veterans’ needs and identifying every patient with military experience at admission.
Who pays: Medicare, the VA, or both
Most veterans over 65 have Medicare, and the Medicare hospice benefit covers hospice care for most families at little or no cost, whether or not the veteran is enrolled in VA health care. Medications, equipment and supplies for the terminal illness are included. A veteran enrolled in VA health care also has hospice as a VA benefit, with no VA copays for hospice. If your family prefers VA-authorized care, we will help you work with the social worker at the veteran’s VA facility to arrange it. A veteran can keep using other VA services, such as pharmacy and mental health care, while on hospice. Our veterans hospice guide explains both paths in detail.

Where care happens in Macomb County
Hospice comes to the veteran: a private home in Warren or Roseville, an assisted living apartment in Sterling Heights or Shelby Township, a memory care unit in Clinton Township or Macomb Township, or a nursing facility in Mount Clemens, St. Clair Shores, Fraser, Eastpointe or Chesterfield. Warren and Sterling Heights are closest to our Troy office; the lakeshore towns and northern townships are a longer drive, and we tell families that up front. Professional interpreters are available for every visit at no cost, and families can request same-gender aides.
Lily does not run a hospice house of its own. When symptoms cannot be managed where the veteran lives, we arrange short-term inpatient care at a partner facility. More about care across the county is on our Macomb County hospice page.
How to start
- Call (248) 955-5100. A real person answers at any hour. Tell us the patient is a veteran.
- A Lily nurse comes for an evaluation, usually within 24 hours, at home or in the facility. Admission is often the same day when the family is ready and a physician certifies eligibility.
- Have the DD-214 handy if you can find it. It helps with pinning, honors and benefits, but care does not wait for it.
