Assisted Living, Homes for the Aged and Adult Foster Care in Metro Detroit: Licensed Directory

Michigan does not license “assisted living.” Senior care homes are licensed as Homes for the Aged or Adult Foster Care homes. This directory lists all 840 state-listed homes in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties that serve older adults. It shows license type, capacity, dementia care and phone, with a link to each state record, from LARA’s September 22, 2026 file.

Michigan has no “assisted living” license

Families search for “assisted living”, but Michigan does not license it. LARA, the state licensing agency, says it does not license assisted or independent living facilities. A facility may still need a Home for the Aged or Adult Foster Care license, depending on how much help it gives residents. So the building your family calls assisted living is usually one of the license types below.

• Home for the aged (HFA): room, board and supervised personal care for 21 or more unrelated residents aged 60 or older. LARA notes that HFAs are not required to have licensed health care professionals on staff. Nursing homes are.
• Home for the aged, exempt: room, meals and supervised personal care for people 55 and older, provided by several separate entities. These facilities are exempt from HFA licensure under MCL 333.21311a. LARA says they do not have to follow state licensing rules, and state complaint investigations are limited.
• Adult Foster Care (AFC): personal care and supervision for adults. The license type depends on size. A family home has up to 6 residents, and the licensee lives there. A small group home has up to 6. A medium group home has 7 to 12. A large group home has 13 to 20. A congregate facility has more than 20.

Many AFC homes serve several groups, such as older adults and adults with developmental disabilities or mental illness. We include a home only if its license lists older adults (“aged”) among those it serves, or if it is a Home for the Aged.

How to choose

• Match the license to the need. A 6-bed family home and a 200-resident Home for the Aged feel very different. Neither provides nursing home care.
• Read the state record. Each license number below opens the home’s LARA profile, where inspection and investigation reports are posted.
• Visit more than once. Go at a mealtime and in the evening. Notice how staff speak to residents.
• Ask about night staffing and who responds if a resident falls or becomes ill after hours.
• Ask what happens as needs grow. Which needs can the home meet, and when would it ask a resident to move?
• Ask about hospice. Can a resident stay in the home on hospice, and how does staff work with a hospice team?

Hospice in assisted living, homes for the aged and adult foster care

A resident does not have to move to receive hospice. The home keeps providing room, meals and daily care. The hospice team adds visits from a nurse, an aide, a social worker and, if wanted, a chaplain. It also brings medications, equipment and supplies related to the terminal illness, and support for the family.

Under Medicare Part A, the hospice benefit covers the care team, medications, equipment and supplies related to the terminal illness. Room and board is not covered by the hospice benefit, so rent and care fees continue as before. The family chooses the hospice. Source: the State of Michigan LARA statewide file of open Adult Foster Care and Homes for the Aged facilities. LARA updates it daily; we pulled it September 22, 2026. We kept LARA county codes for Oakland, Macomb and Wayne. We kept every Home for the Aged, licensed or exempt, and every AFC home whose license lists older adults. That is 840 of the 1511 open licenses in the three counties.

Some campuses hold more than one license, for example an exempt Home for the Aged and an AFC home at the same address. Each license is listed separately. Capacity is the licensed or registered capacity, not current residents. Names are as filed with the state; a few all-capital names were changed to normal capitalization, and city spellings were tidied. Exempt homes do not have an Alzheimer’s field in the state file, so that column is blank for them. Corrections are welcome at (248) 955-5100.

Common questions

Does Michigan license assisted living facilities?

No. LARA states that Michigan does not license assisted or independent living facilities. A facility may need a Home for the Aged or Adult Foster Care license, depending on the care it provides. LARA explains this here.

What is the difference between a Home for the Aged and an Adult Foster Care home?

A Home for the Aged provides room, board and supervised personal care to 21 or more residents aged 60 or older. Adult Foster Care homes serve adults in settings from a family home of up to 6 residents to congregate homes of more than 20. Both provide personal care and supervision, not nursing home care.

What does “Home for the aged, exempt” mean?

LARA lists these as facilities that provide room, meals and supervised personal care to people 55 and older. They are exempt from Home for the Aged licensure under Michigan law. LARA says they are not required to comply with state licensing rules. Ask these facilities directly how care is provided and overseen.

What does “Serves Alzheimer’s” mean in this directory?

It means the home’s LARA record lists Alzheimer’s among the populations it serves. It is not a separate memory care certification. Ask each home how it cares for residents with dementia, including at night.

Can someone in assisted living or adult foster care receive hospice?

Does Medicare pay for assisted living?
