November 2026. Written and reviewed by the Lily Hospice clinical team.
Evan Shelline, the Navy SEAL veteran who chairs Lily Hospice’s Veteran Advisory Committee, has launched a podcast for veterans who stopped talking about their service years ago, and for the families who would like to understand them. The Veteran Muster with Evan Shelline is on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music and other podcast apps.
What the podcast is
Episodes are short, most under fifteen minutes, and take up what veterans say to each other once they are in a room together: peer support, how to make a Buddy Check with a veteran you know, what the men and women who served in Korea and Vietnam are carrying as they become our nation’s oldest Veterans, and leadership lessons from the SEAL Teams.
It grew out of The Veteran Muster: All Present and Accounted For, a veterans-only gathering Evan Shelline (Evan Mark Shelline) founded and holds in senior living communities across Southeast Michigan. “I’m talking to him about things that he hasn’t talked to his family about,” he said on Veterans Radio in October. “That peer-to-peer support is vital.”
Episode one is his interview recorded at Inbound 281’s Studio 281 in Troy, on why so many Vietnam-era veterans keep a boundary up, and when a family should make a call.
Why it matters to a hospice
Much of what Lily’s Veteran Advisory Committee asks of Lily comes down to the same thing: another veteran in the room. Veteran-to-veteran visits, the question “Did you ever serve?” at the first visit, pinning ceremonies with VFW Post 6896. A veteran who has been quiet for fifty years often says more to a fellow veteran in an hour than to anyone else in a decade. The podcast is that conversation, recorded.
