September 2026. Written by Lily Hospice.
Lily Hospice and its sister company Balanced Home Care sponsored and walked in the 2026 Detroit Walk to End Alzheimer’s at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak. The Walk raises money for the Alzheimer’s Association’s care, support and research. Lily Hospice cares for many people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias at home and in memory care across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.
Our team showed up in white “Walking to End Alzheimer’s” shirts, purple beads and, for a few of us, face glitter. We walked alongside thousands of metro Detroit families, many carrying the purple, yellow, orange and blue flowers that show each walker’s connection to the disease: someone living with it, a caregiver, someone lost, or a supporter.
We walk because dementia is a large part of our work. Many of the families Lily serves have cared for a parent with Alzheimer’s for years before hospice. By the time they call us, they are tired, and they deserve a team that understands what the late stages look like.
When is it time for hospice with dementia?
Medicare covers hospice for dementia when a doctor certifies a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease runs its usual course. Signs families often notice include needing help with every daily activity, speaking only a few words, losing the ability to walk, trouble swallowing, weight loss, and repeated infections or hospital stays. Read our full guide to hospice for dementia and Alzheimer’s, and our hospice glossary for the terms you will hear.
If you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and not sure whether it is time, call us. A real person answers, and a conversation costs nothing.
