Bloomfield Hills is a small city of wooded lots and winding roads along Woodward Avenue, home to the Cranbrook campus and surrounded by the much larger Bloomfield Township. Most families here think of the two as one community, sharing a mailing address, the same schools and the same stretch of Long Lake, Square Lake and Quarton roads. Many parents in these neighborhoods have lived in the same house for forty years and want to stay there. Others have moved into one of the area’s assisted living residences to be closer to their children. Either way, hospice can come to them, and our office in Troy is just a few miles east.
Starting hospice in Bloomfield Hills
Hospice often begins with a hospital stay. Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township families most often use Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Trinity Health Oakland Hospital just up Woodward in Pontiac, or Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital. If a doctor recommends comfort care, ask the case manager to call Lily. We will line up equipment, medications and the first nursing visit so the move home is calm. Our guides to going home on hospice from the hospital and leaving Corewell Royal Oak on hospice explain what to expect.
If your loved one is at home already, call us directly; you do not need a referral to ask questions. A nurse will visit, often the same day, to talk with the family and assess symptoms. Once the physician signs the order, the team starts: nurse visits for pain, breathing and medications; an aide for bathing and personal care; a social worker for planning, advance directives and family meetings; and a chaplain if you wish.
Who is eligible
A person qualifies for hospice when their physician believes a serious illness is likely to run its course in about six months, and the person chooses comfort-focused care. Common reasons include dementia, heart failure, COPD, cancer, kidney disease, Parkinson’s and general decline in advanced age. Hospice is not only for the last days. Families who start earlier usually get more from it: better symptom control, fewer emergency trips, and time to say what needs saying.
Not sure? Our Is It Time? guide and signs it may be time for hospice are a good place to start, and an evaluation visit carries no obligation.
Paying for hospice
Hospice is a Medicare Part A benefit, and it covers the team’s visits, medications and equipment for the terminal illness, supplies, respite stays and a year of family bereavement support. Medicaid and most private insurance cover hospice in a similar way. If your parent has a Medicare Advantage plan, hospice is still covered, through Original Medicare. Hospice does not pay for room and board in assisted living or a nursing home, which families should know when planning. Respite for caregivers
Long illnesses wear down even the most devoted spouse or daughter. Under the Medicare hospice benefit, the patient can stay up to five days in a Medicare-approved facility so the family caregiver can rest or travel, then return home. Lily makes the arrangements. How hospice respite care works.
