October 7, 2026. Written and reviewed by the Lily Hospice clinical team.

Lily Hospice’s Veteran Advisory Committee held its first meeting on October 7, 2026. The committee is chaired by Evan Shelline, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, and advises Lily on caring for veterans and their families at the end of life in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

Why a Veteran Advisory Committee

Military service can shape the end of life in specific ways: service-connected illness, experiences that resurface near the end, benefits a family may not know about, and the wish to be recognized for having served. Lily is a We Honor Veterans Bronze Level partner. The committee keeps that commitment honest by putting veterans at the table.

Chairman Evan Shelline

The committee’s Chairman is Evan Shelline, a former U.S. Navy SEAL. He leads the committee’s meetings and its advice to Lily on how veterans and their families are cared for.

What the committee does

  • Reviews how Lily asks “Did you ever serve?” at the first visit, and what happens when the answer is yes.
  • Advises Lily’s Veteran Rapid Response team on what veterans and their families need in the first days of hospice.
  • Helps Lily build relationships with VFW and American Legion posts, county veterans service offices, and the VA.
  • Shapes recognition for veterans on hospice, such as pinning ceremonies, in ways that fit each veteran and family.
  • Reviews Lily’s family resources, including the checklist of end-of-life benefits for Michigan veterans.
