In the first week, the nurse settles into a visit schedule and shows the family how to handle medications and changes. A hospice aide helps with bathing and personal care. Who qualifies for hospice
Hospice is for someone whose doctor believes a serious illness would likely lead to death within about six months if it takes its expected course, and who wants comfort to come first. That includes cancer, heart failure, COPD, dementia, kidney failure, stroke, liver disease and advanced age with steady decline. Eligibility is certified by two physicians, and a person can stay on hospice beyond six months if they still qualify.
