Caring for someone in Oakland, Macomb or Wayne County? A real person answers at Lily Hospice 24 hours a day. You do not need a referral, and calling does not commit you to anything.
Waterford took its name from its water. The township holds 34 named lakes, from little Baldwin Lake to the big stretch of Cass Lake, and the township grew up as a summer resort before lake homes became year-round houses. Dixie Highway, Telegraph Road and Highland Road carry most of the traffic, and Oakland County International Airport sits in the middle of it all. Waterford is a practical, hardworking community with long roots in the auto industry, and when a parent gets sick here, the family usually rallies around the lake house. Hospice lets them keep doing that, with nurses and aides coming to them.
Starting hospice in Waterford: the first call and the first week
For most Waterford families, the nearest hospitals are Trinity Health Oakland Hospital on Woodward Avenue and McLaren Oakland on North Perry Street, both in neighboring Pontiac. If a physician there recommends hospice, ask the care manager to contact Lily before discharge. We coordinate the hospital bed, oxygen and comfort medications so they arrive at the house around the same time your loved one does. Our guide to going home on hospice from the hospital lists what to ask for before you leave.
From home, the process starts with a phone call and a nurse’s visit, usually the same day. The nurse examines your loved one, reviews medications and talks through goals with the family. After the physician’s order, the team settles into a rhythm: regular nurse visits, aide visits for bathing and personal care, a social worker who helps with paperwork and planning, and a chaplain for anyone who wants one. Between visits, a nurse is one phone call away.
Who qualifies for hospice
Anyone whose physician expects a serious illness to run its course within about six months, and who chooses comfort over further aggressive treatment, can qualify. Heart and lung disease, cancer, dementia, kidney and liver failure, stroke and advanced age are all common reasons. The person’s own doctor can stay involved, and hospice can be stopped at any time if the person changes their mind.
Two short reads help many families decide: Is It Time? and signs it may be time for hospice. A Lily nurse can also come out for a free evaluation.
What hospice costs
Medicare Part A pays for hospice in full, including visits from the team, medications and equipment related to the terminal illness, supplies, respite stays and grief support for the family. Medicaid and most employer and private plans do the same, and people with Medicare Advantage still have their hospice benefit through Original Medicare. The result is that most Waterford families pay nothing out of pocket for hospice services.
