Commerce Township is lake country. The Huron River runs through it, Proud Lake State Recreation Area covers a large stretch of its land, and neighborhoods like Union Lake, Wolverine Lake, Commerce Village and Oakley Park grew up around the water. The township began as a resort area and grew into a residential community that still values its rural feel and open space. Roads like Union Lake Road, Haggerty and M-5 connect it all to Walled Lake, Wixom and White Lake. For a family caring for someone seriously ill, that quiet can also feel isolating. Hospice brings a team to the house so that no one has to do this alone.

Starting hospice in Commerce Township

The closest hospital for most Commerce families is DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital on William Carls Drive, right in the township. Many families also use Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital on West Maple. If a doctor at either hospital raises hospice, call us before discharge and we will help time the trip home so the hospital bed and medications are there when you arrive. Our guide to going home on hospice from the hospital explains what to ask for.

If your person is already home, call and a nurse will come out, usually the same day. The nurse listens, examines, and explains honestly what hospice can and cannot do. With the physician’s order, care can begin right away: equipment delivered to the door, comfort medications from a pharmacy that delivers, and a single number that reaches a nurse day or night.

During the first week you will meet the nurse, who manages pain and other symptoms and teaches the family what to expect; a hospice aide, who helps with bathing and personal care; and a social worker, who helps with planning, paperwork and family conversations. A chaplain visits if you would like. Because Commerce is a longer drive from Troy than some of our areas, we schedule visits with care and make sure you always know who is coming and when.

Who qualifies for hospice

Hospice is for a person whose doctor believes a serious illness would likely run its course within about six months if it follows its usual path, and who wants care aimed at comfort. That includes cancer, heart failure, COPD, dementia, kidney disease, stroke, ALS, Parkinson’s, liver disease and decline in advanced age. Two physicians certify eligibility. Nobody has to be bedbound. Read our Is It Time? guide and signs it may be time for hospice.

What Medicare, Medicaid and insurance cover

Medicare Part A pays for hospice in full, as do Michigan Medicaid and most Medicare Advantage and commercial plans. That covers team visits, medications for the hospice diagnosis, equipment, supplies, short respite stays and bereavement support. Most families pay nothing out of pocket. Nursing homes and assisted living in Commerce Township

Michigan’s licensing agency (LARA) lists 21 state-licensed assisted living, adult foster care and home-for-the-aged residences in Commerce Township, Walled Lake, Wixom and White Lake. Sixteen of them list serving people with Alzheimer’s disease, and together they are licensed for 918 residents. The area has two Medicare-certified nursing homes:

Nursing home Address Phone Beds Medicare overall rating
The Neighborhoods of White Lake 10770 Elizabeth Lake Road, White Lake (248) 618-4100 39 5 of 5 stars
Westlake Health Campus 10735 Bogie Lake Road, Commerce Township (248) 363-9400 61 4 of 5 stars

Hospice can come to a resident in any of these settings; ask the facility and us how it works there. Listing is for families’ reference and does not mean an affiliation.

Respite for caregivers

Caregivers here are often spouses who have been managing alone for months. Hospice includes respite care: up to five days in a Medicare-approved facility so the caregiver can rest, after which the patient comes home. Lily arranges it. Read about hospice respite care.
