Ferndale packs a lot into under four square miles. Downtown, around Woodward Avenue and Nine Mile, is walkable and busy, and the side streets are lined with bungalows and small brick homes where people have lived for decades next to younger families who just moved in. The city runs from Eight Mile, the Detroit border, up to I-696, with Oak Park to the west and Hazel Park to the east. Ferndale is also known across metro Detroit as a center of the LGBTQ+ community, home to the Affirmations community center. Families here come in every shape: spouses, partners, chosen family, adult children, longtime neighbors. When someone in that circle becomes seriously ill, Lily’s job is to support whoever is doing the caring, however your family is put together.
Starting hospice in Ferndale
Ferndale families are usually treated at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital on Thirteen Mile in Royal Oak, a short drive up Woodward, or at Henry Ford Hospital on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. When a doctor there raises hospice, you can call Lily from the hospital room and we will help coordinate discharge so equipment is in place when you get home. See our guides on going home on hospice from Corewell Royal Oak, going home on hospice from Henry Ford Hospital, and leaving any hospital on hospice.
If your person is at home, just call. A nurse comes out, usually that same day, to listen, examine, and explain what hospice would mean for your family. With the physician’s order, care can start right away: a hospital bed or oxygen delivered to the door, comfort medications from a pharmacy that delivers, and one number that reaches a hospice nurse any hour of the day or night.
Over the first week, the nurse visits to manage pain, breathlessness and other symptoms and to teach caregivers what to expect. A hospice aide helps with bathing and personal care. A social worker helps with advance directives, paperwork and planning, and a chaplain or spiritual care provider visits if that is wanted, from any tradition or none. If the bedrooms in your house are upstairs, the team can also help you figure out where to set up a bed on the main floor.
Who qualifies for hospice
Hospice is for people whose doctor believes their illness would likely run its course within about six months if it follows its usual path, and who want care aimed at comfort. That covers cancer, advanced heart and lung disease, dementia, kidney and liver failure, stroke, ALS, Parkinson’s and the frailty of very old age. Two physicians certify eligibility. People do not need to be bedbound, and they can leave hospice at any time. Our Is It Time? guide and signs it may be time for hospice are good places to start.
What Medicare, Medicaid and insurance cover
Hospice is covered in full under Medicare Part A and Michigan Medicaid, and most Medicare Advantage and employer plans cover it too. That includes the care team’s visits, medications for the hospice diagnosis, equipment, supplies, short respite stays and bereavement support. Most Ferndale families pay nothing out of pocket for hospice. Read what Medicare covers in Michigan, how Medicare Advantage handles hospice and what hospice costs in Michigan.
Nursing homes and assisted living in Ferndale
Michigan’s licensing agency (LARA) lists three state-licensed assisted living, adult foster care and home-for-the-aged residences in Ferndale, licensed for 136 residents in total. None of the three lists serving people with Alzheimer’s disease, so families looking for memory care often look in Royal Oak, Southfield or farther north. Ferndale has one Medicare-certified nursing home:
| Nursing home | Address | Phone | Beds | Medicare overall rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oakridge Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center LLC | 3161 Hilton Rd, Ferndale | (248) 547-6227 | 64 | 3 of 5 stars |
Hospice can come to a resident in any of these settings; ask the facility and us how it works there. Listing is for families’ reference and does not mean an affiliation.

Respite for caregivers
Caring for someone at home, especially in a small house with stairs, is exhausting. Medicare’s hospice benefit includes respite: up to five days in a Medicare-approved facility so the caregiver can rest or handle their own life for a few days, with the patient coming home afterward. Lily sets it up. Learn more about hospice respite care.

How fast can hospice start in Ferndale?
A nurse can usually evaluate the same day you call, including evenings and weekends, and care often begins within 24 hours once the physician’s order is in place. Read how fast hospice can start.
My partner and I are not married. Can I be the main caregiver and decision contact?
Yes. Hospice works with whoever the patient names. We encourage everyone to complete a patient advocate designation so the person’s choices are clear, and our social worker can help with the form.
Can hospice start this weekend?
Yes. Our intake nurses work weekends and holidays. See starting hospice this weekend.
My mom lives alone in Ferndale. Is hospice at home still possible?
Often it is. Hospice does not provide 24-hour staff in the home, so we help the family plan who checks in and when, and we are honest if another setting would be safer. Read hospice when a parent lives alone.
Can we change hospices if we are not happy with ours?
Yes. Medicare lets patients change hospice providers, and we can help with the transfer. See can you switch hospice providers.
What does hospice cost?
For people with Medicare, Medicaid or most insurance, nothing out of pocket for hospice services. We explain any exception before care begins.
