The first call and the first week in Hamtramck

If your loved one is at home, call and a nurse will visit, usually that same day. With an interpreter if needed, the nurse sits with the family, examines the patient, and explains what hospice includes. If the family and doctor agree, care begins at home. A hospital bed, oxygen or other equipment is delivered, comfort medications come from a pharmacy that delivers, and the family gets one number that reaches a nurse any hour of the day or night.
In the first week, the nurse visits to manage pain, breathing and other symptoms and to teach the family. A hospice aide helps with bathing and personal care, and families can tell us if they prefer a caregiver of the same gender; we do our best to honor it. A social worker helps with paperwork and planning. We respect religious practices around prayer, modesty and care after death, and we welcome your own imam, priest or pastor.
Who qualifies for hospice
Hospice is for a person whose doctor believes a serious illness would likely run its course within about six months if it follows its normal path, and who wants care focused on comfort. That includes cancer, heart failure, lung disease, dementia, kidney failure, stroke, liver disease and the decline of very old age. Medicare Part A covers hospice in full, and Michigan Medicaid and most Medicare Advantage and commercial plans do as well. Nursing homes and assisted living in Hamtramck
Michigan’s licensing agency (LARA) lists just one state-licensed assisted living or adult foster care residence in Hamtramck and Highland Park combined, a small group home licensed for four residents that lists serving people with Alzheimer’s disease.
