The Grosse Pointes, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe (the city), Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Shores and Grosse Pointe Woods, run in a narrow strip along Lake St. Clair just east of Detroit. Lake Shore Road follows the water past estates that grew out of the summer homes wealthy Detroiters began building in the 1850s; Kercheval Avenue holds The Village shopping district; and Mack Avenue is the main business corridor in the Woods. Harper Woods, just to the west along I-94, shares the same senior center, and part of it is in the Grosse Pointe school district. When someone here becomes seriously ill, the wish is usually to stay at home, in familiar rooms, with family close. Hospice is how families make that happen.
Starting hospice in the Grosse Pointes: the first call and the first week
Two hospitals serve most families here: Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital on Cadieux Road, and Henry Ford St. John Hospital on Moross Road, just over the line in Detroit. If a doctor at either one brings up hospice, ask the case manager to call Lily and call us yourself. We can meet with the family before discharge, set up the hospital bed and oxygen at home, and have a nurse there the day your loved one arrives. When your loved one is already home, a Lily nurse comes to the house, usually that day or the next, to listen, examine and explain. If hospice fits and the doctor agrees, the admission is done then and there. In the first week the nurse returns to manage pain, breathlessness and other symptoms, an aide helps with bathing and personal care, a social worker helps with planning and paperwork, and a chaplain visits if the family wishes. Comfort medications are delivered to the door.
Who qualifies for hospice
Hospice is for anyone whose physician believes a serious illness will likely run its course within about six months if it follows its usual course, and who would rather focus on comfort than on further treatment aimed at cure. Advanced dementia, cancer, heart failure, COPD, kidney failure, stroke, Parkinson’s, ALS and the decline of advanced age are all common. What Medicare and insurance pay for
Medicare Part A covers hospice in full, as do most Medicare Advantage plans, Michigan Medicaid and private insurance. Coverage includes visits from the whole team, medications related to the hospice diagnosis, medical equipment and supplies, short respite stays and a year of grief support for the family.
