FOX 2 Detroit: virtual reality makes hospice patients’ dreams come true

FOX 2 Detroit (WJBK), June 16, 2022. FOX 2 reporters Amy Lange and Amber Ainsworth visited Lily Hospice to report on the Journey Program. Patients wear a virtual reality headset and are surrounded by a 360-degree experience: swimming with dolphins, scuba diving, a gondola ride in Venice, a concert, or a trip back to a childhood home. The team also builds custom experiences, so a patient can be present for a grandchild’s graduation or a family wedding they cannot attend in person, and the story previewed Detroit experiences such as the Riverfront, the Renaissance Center and the Fisher Theatre.

The report includes a daughter describing her father’s care, and Lily’s owner describing a patient who went swimming with dolphins: “she just loved it, broke down in tears.”

MIXED Reality News: hospice fulfills patients’ dreams in virtual reality

Why the Journey Program matters to families

Hospice is about comfort and about living fully for as long as possible. Virtual reality gives patients who are bed-bound or too ill to travel a way to see the ocean again, return to a place from their past, or simply rest somewhere calm. Our team also uses familiar music and gentle sensory experiences with patients living with dementia, where a familiar place can bring calm when words no longer do.
