What We Honor Veterans is
We Honor Veterans is a national program for hospices and other care-at-home providers, run by the National Alliance for Care at Home. It gives providers training and resources for caring for veterans at the end of life, and it recognizes partners at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Providers earn each level by completing a set of activities and reporting on them.
What the Bronze Level means
The program describes Bronze as the commitment and assessment level. A Bronze Level partner has built the foundation for veteran-centered care: staff are educated about veterans’ needs, and patients with military experience are identified so that their service becomes part of the care plan. At Lily that starts with one question at the first visit: “Did you ever serve?”
What Lily does for veterans
- Veteran Advisory Committee. A group of veterans and community members who advise Lily on how it cares for veterans. The committee held its first meeting on October 7, 2026, chaired by Evan Shelline, a former U.S. Navy SEAL. About the committee.
- Veteran Rapid Response. A team built to get veteran families help quickly.
- Veteran volunteers. Veterans who visit veteran patients.
- Pinning ceremonies. A formal thank-you for a veteran’s service, at the bedside, with family present. See a Navy veteran’s pinning ceremony.
- Help with VA benefits. Our social workers help families work through what a veteran has earned. Start with the checklist of end-of-life benefits for Michigan veterans.
Why it matters to a family
Military service can shape the end of life: service-connected illness, memories that resurface, benefits a family may not know about, and the wish to be recognized for having served. A hospice that asks about service early can plan for all of it. The We Honor Veterans level tells a family, a VA social worker or a discharge planner that a hospice has done that groundwork.
