Updated September 2026. Written and reviewed by the Lily Hospice clinical team.
Lily Hospice provides hospice care throughout Westland, at home and in assisted living, memory care and nursing homes. Our Troy office is about 45 minutes away without traffic, a nurse can usually evaluate the same day you call, and a real person answers (248) 955-5100 around the clock.
Westland is a young city with old roots. It was Nankin Township until 1966, when residents voted to become a city rather than be absorbed by Livonia, and many of the families who made that choice still live here. Neighborhoods like Norwayne, built for returning World War II veterans, sit a few minutes from the Westland Shopping Center, Central City Park and the wooded stretch of Hines Park along the city’s north side. When a parent or spouse here becomes seriously ill, most families want the same thing: to keep them home, comfortable and close. Hospice is how that happens.
Starting hospice in Westland: the first call and the first week
Most Westland families reach us after a hospital stay. The hospitals we hear about most are Corewell Health Wayne Hospital on Annapolis Street, just across the city line in Wayne, Garden City Hospital on Inkster Road, and Trinity Health Livonia Hospital on Five Mile. If your loved one is in one of them now, ask the case manager to call us, or call us yourself. We can often meet you at the bedside, and our guide to going home on hospice from the hospital walks through what to ask before discharge.
Once you call, a Lily nurse comes to the house on Cherry Hill, Joy Road or wherever home is, usually the same day. The nurse listens first, then examines your loved one, reviews medications and answers questions. If hospice fits and the doctor agrees, we sign the consent together and set up what is needed: a hospital bed and other equipment delivered to the door, comfort medications from a pharmacy that delivers, and a single number that reaches a nurse at 3 a.m. as easily as at noon.
In the first week you will meet the whole team. The nurse sets a visit schedule and teaches the family what to watch for. A hospice aide helps with bathing, shaving and fresh linens. A social worker helps with advance directives, insurance questions, and the practical worries that pile up. A chaplain visits if you would like one, whatever your faith or none. You stay in charge; we fit around your household.
Who qualifies for hospice
A person qualifies when a doctor believes their illness would likely run its course in about six months if it follows its usual path, and they would rather focus on comfort than on another round of treatment aimed at a cure. Common reasons include advanced heart failure, COPD, cancer, dementia, kidney failure, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and the gradual decline of very old age. Warning signs families notice include repeated ER visits, steady weight loss, sleeping most of the day, and needing help with things that used to be easy.
Nobody needs to be bedbound, and signing up does not mean giving up. If you are unsure, read the signs it may be time for hospice or our Is It Time? guide, then ask for a no-obligation visit.
What Medicare, Medicaid and insurance cover
Medicare Part A pays for hospice in full, and so do Michigan Medicaid and most Medicare Advantage and employer plans. That covers visits from the nurse, aide, social worker and chaplain; medications and equipment related to the hospice diagnosis; supplies such as briefs and wound dressings; short respite stays; and bereavement support afterward. For the details, see what Medicare covers for hospice in Michigan, how Medicare Advantage works with hospice and what hospice costs in Michigan. Room and board in a nursing home or assisted living is the one piece hospice does not pay; our social worker can help you sort that out.

Respite when a Westland caregiver needs a break
Many caregivers here are spouses in their seventies or adult children working full shifts at the same time. Hospice includes respite care for exactly this reason: up to five days in a Medicare-approved facility while the caregiver rests, attends a wedding, or gets over their own illness. Lily arranges the stay and the transport, and your loved one comes home afterward. How hospice respite care works.
