Most people in metro Detroit know Romulus as the home of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, but the airport is only part of it. Romulus was settled in 1826, became a city in 1970, and was a documented stop on the Underground Railroad. Today about 25,000 people live here, in neighborhoods spread across roughly 36 square miles bounded by Van Born Road, Inkster Road, Pennsylvania Road and Hannan Road, with I-94 and I-275 crossing the city. To the west, Belleville and Van Buren Township sit around Belleville Lake, and New Boston lies to the south in Huron Township. Distances out here are longer than in the inner suburbs, which is one more reason hospice at home, with the team coming to you, makes sense.
Starting hospice in Romulus: the first call and the first week
Families in Romulus and the western townships most often find themselves at Corewell Health Wayne Hospital on Annapolis Street or at Corewell Health Taylor Hospital on Telegraph Road. If someone there raises hospice, ask the case manager to contact Lily and call us yourself. We can plan the discharge with you, have the hospital bed and oxygen delivered before your loved one gets home, and schedule the first nursing visit for that day. Our guide to going home on hospice from the hospital explains each step.
From home, the process starts with a phone call and a nurse’s visit, often the same day. The nurse talks with the family, examines your loved one and explains what hospice includes. If you decide to go ahead and the doctor agrees, admission happens right there. During the first week you will meet the nurse, a hospice aide, a social worker and, if you would like, a chaplain. Comfort medicines come to the house, and you have one number to call at any hour.
Who qualifies for hospice
Someone qualifies when their physician expects a serious illness to likely run its course within about six months if things follow their usual path, and the person chooses comfort care over further attempts at a cure. Cancer, heart failure, lung disease, dementia, kidney failure, stroke, liver disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS and the frailty of very old age are all common reasons. Hospice is not only for the final days; people often have months of better-managed symptoms. If you are unsure, start with our Is It Time? guide and the signs it may be time.
