Lily Hospice provides hospice care throughout Taylor, Michigan, at home and in assisted living, memory care and nursing homes. Our Troy office is about 40 minutes away, a nurse can usually evaluate the same day you call, and a real person answers (248) 955-5100 around the clock.
Taylor grew from township farmland, named for President Zachary Taylor in 1847, into one of the largest Downriver cities, with about 63,000 people when it was last counted in 2020. Most families know it by its main roads: Telegraph Road running north and south through the middle of town, Eureka Road with its shopping district and Southland Center, and I-94 and I-75 at the edges. When someone here becomes seriously ill, the wish is usually the same as anywhere: to stay in their own house, in their own bed, with family close by. Hospice is built to make that possible, and to keep the people doing the caring from running themselves into the ground.
Starting hospice in Taylor: the first call and the first week
For many Taylor families the conversation about hospice starts in a hospital room, often at Corewell Health Taylor Hospital on Telegraph Road or at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital on Oakwood Boulevard. If a discharge is coming, tell the case manager you would like Lily, and call us too. We can often meet the family at the bedside, arrange the hospital bed and oxygen for the house before the ride home, and have a nurse there the evening of arrival. Our guides to going home on hospice from the hospital and leaving Corewell Health Dearborn on hospice walk through each step.
If your loved one is already home, the first call is simpler. A nurse comes to the house, listens to what has been happening, examines your loved one and explains what hospice would look like. If everyone agrees, admission paperwork is done at the kitchen table. Over the first week you will meet the nurse, a hospice aide for bathing and personal care, a social worker and, if you want one, a chaplain. Medications for comfort are delivered, and the family gets a single number that reaches a nurse at any hour.
Who qualifies for hospice
A person qualifies when their doctor and the hospice physician believe an illness will likely run its course within about six months if it follows its usual path, and the person would rather focus on comfort than on another round of aggressive treatment. Common reasons include cancer, heart failure, COPD, dementia, kidney disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, ALS and the slow decline of very old age. Your loved one does not need to be in bed all day. If you are unsure, read our Is It Time? guide and the signs it may be time for hospice, or ask for an evaluation with no obligation.
What Medicare, Medicaid and insurance cover
Medicare Part A covers hospice in full, and so do most Medicare Advantage, Michigan Medicaid and employer plans. That includes nurse and aide visits, medicines related to the hospice diagnosis, the hospital bed, wheelchair, oxygen and supplies, social work and spiritual care, short respite stays, and grief support afterward. Most Taylor families pay nothing out of pocket for hospice. Details are in does Medicare cover hospice in Michigan, Medicare Advantage and hospice and how much hospice costs in Michigan.

Respite when a Taylor caregiver needs a break
Caregivers wear out, especially a spouse who is also in their seventies or eighties. The hospice benefit includes respite care: up to five days in a Medicare-approved facility while the caregiver sleeps, sees a doctor of their own, or goes to a family event, and then your loved one comes home. Lily’s social worker sets it up. Read more in what hospice respite care is.
