Wyandotte is a river town. The Detroit River forms its eastern edge, Bishop Park sits on the waterfront, and downtown runs along Biddle Avenue on a street grid laid out in the 1800s. The city grew up around industry, from the Michigan Alkali Company, whose works are now part of BASF, to the shipyards that operated from the 1870s into the 1920s. South along the river are Riverview, Trenton and the island township of Grosse Ile, which share the same hospitals and the same stretch of Fort Street. This page covers all four.
Starting hospice Downriver: the first call and the first week
Most Downriver families come to hospice through one of two local hospitals: Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital on Biddle Avenue, or Corewell Health Trenton Hospital on Fort Street. If a doctor there has raised hospice, ask the case manager for Lily by name and call us as well. We can talk with the family before discharge, get the hospital bed and oxygen delivered to the house, and schedule the nurse’s first visit for the day your loved one arrives home. Our guide to going home on hospice from the hospital lays out what to ask for.
When the call comes from home instead, a Lily nurse visits, usually the same day or the next. The nurse spends time with your loved one and with you, reviews medications and explains what hospice would change. If it is the right time, admission happens right there. In the days that follow, the nurse returns to manage pain and breathing, an aide helps with bathing, a social worker helps with paperwork and planning, and a chaplain is available for anyone who wants one.
Is it time? Who qualifies
Hospice is for a person whose physician expects a serious illness to likely run its course within about six months, and who has chosen comfort over further curative treatment. That can mean cancer, heart or lung disease, advanced dementia, kidney failure, stroke, Parkinson’s, ALS, liver disease or the general frailty of great age. People can stay on hospice longer than six months if they still qualify, and they can leave hospice if they get better. Our Is It Time? guide and the list of signs it may be time help families think it through.
Paying for hospice
Medicare Part A pays for hospice in full. Most Medicare Advantage plans, Michigan Medicaid and private insurance do too. Coverage includes visits by the nurse, aide, social worker and chaplain; medicines for comfort related to the hospice diagnosis; equipment and supplies; short respite stays; and bereavement support.
